Retirement of Emeritus Professor Phil Waite

After retiring as Head of the Department of Anatomy and Director of the Neural Injury Research Unit at the University of NSW in 2008, Phil established and led the Spinal Network’s Research Development Committee. She then joined the Board in 2011 and was appointed the Chair in 2014. On 4 November 2016 she retired from the Board after serving her maximum period.

Phil, an Emeritus Professor of Medical Science at the UNSW, oversaw competitive grant processes including the travel grants program and the PhD Scholarship, she made representations at ACTA and ANZSCoS, and gave support to Connections 2012 and 2014.

She had a long-standing interest in spinal cord injury and research. She was involved in some of the earliest cell transplantation studies, aimed at repairing cord injuries and improving function. She had maintained a research interest in potential therapies for the repair of the injured spinal cord through collaborations both in Australia and overseas.
