Professor Brian J. C. Freeman

Professor Freeman is the Head of Spinal Services at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Professor of Spinal Surgery at the University of Adelaide and Senior Visiting Paediatric Spinal Surgeon at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, a Fellow of the   Australasian College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association. 

Professor Freeman is a leading consultant spinal surgeon and an internationally acclaimed researcher in both basic science and clinical research fields. He is an active clinician with a major interest in spinal cord injury and paediatric spinal deformity.   

Under the auspices of the Australian Spinal Cord Injury Network (ASCIN), Professor Freeman is the current Chair of the Clinical Trials Committee.  This committee aims to assist the development and implementation of multi-centre spinal cord injury clinical trials in Australia and New Zealand.  Professor Freeman serves on the Expert Review Panel for the Lifetime Support Authority of South Australia.

In the last 5 years, Professor Freeman has been supported by AUD $3.2 million from peer review funding bodies and attracted an additional AUD $2.7 million from industry to support his research.  Current peer-review project grants include; Immediate cooling and emergency decompression (ICED) for the treatment of spinal cord injury: Pilot, safety and feasibility studies 2014-2016. Freeman [CIC] NHMRC Project Grant APP ID 1066217 AUD $581,561 and Freeman [CID] Institute for Safety, Compensation and Recovery Research (ISCRR) AUD $971,000.   

To date, Professor Freeman has published 82 peer-reviewed original publications, 19 book chapters, 143 published abstracts from 212 podium presentations and 94 poster presentations to national and international meetings. He has been awarded 35 national and international prizes for his research and teaching including: 2007 ISSLS Prize in Clinical Studies, 2009 Spine Society of Australia Spinal Research Award, 2009 ISSLS Prize in Basic Science/Biomechanics, 2012 Spine Journal Outstanding Paper Award in Surgical Science (Runner Up), 2013 Spine Society of Australia Spinal Research Award, and the 2015 Spine Society of Australia Spinal Research Award.

Professor Freeman has acted as External Examiner for the Australian National University (PhD), the University of Capetown (Masters) and the University of Queensland (Masters).
